Steps For Solving Equations

For a example, say you have the problem x+8=10. you have to figure out what x equals. The x is called a variable. The variable can be any other letter. The first step to do that is split both sides of the equals sign so you have x+8 on one side, and 10 on the other. You always use in this case the number 8 and since you are doing addition, you would subtract 8 from the numbers 8 and 10. 8 and 8 are not anything anymore, and 10 is now 2 and then you figure out that x=2.

Then, to make sure you are right, you have to check it. First you rewrite the problem. x+8=10. Next, you plug in the answer you got. 2+8=10. You see two tens so then you write down 10=10 because these are both your answers. Lastly, you write down what the variable equals. x=2.

Factors and GCF

First i am going to tell you how to find factors. Lets say you have the number 30. Now you have to list all the numbers that go into 30. There are 2 different ways to list the factors, but this is how I like to list them. First, I know that 1 and 30 are factors so i put down 1,30. Then, since it is a even number, i know 2 goes into it with 15 because 15x2 is 30. Now I should have down 1,30,2,15. You probably get it now so I will just put down all the factors. your final answer should be 1,30,2,15,3,10,5,6.

Now I am going to talk about the GCF. GCF stands for Greatest Common Factor. We will use 30 as a example again. First, I like to list all the factors. 1,30,2,15,3,10,5,6. We cannot use 30 because you are not supposed to use the number listed or it would be to easy. Now we take the biggest number out of the factors and in this case it would be 15. 15 would then be your answer.
